Tavistock Canal - Archaeological Excavations

Mill Hill Wharf - 2004

Excavations in a garden adjoining the Mission House (formerly the Canal Company's warehouse at the wharf) revealed the position and dimensions of a large stone-lined basin with a canal channel linking it with the warehouse. This was shown to have been backfilled with slate quarry tailings after its abandonment c.1832.

A separate excavation in the garden of the adjoining property to the south of the warehouse, revealed the arch which carried the canal under the warehouse. This showed that the warehouse was of identical pattern to that at Tavistock Wharf (see above); barges probably being loaded and discharged via a hatch in the floor of the building above.
